Contact for Volunteer Docent program:
The Belgrade Historical Society (BHS) is looking for volunteers to serve as docents in our history room when it is open to the public. The BHS history room is located in the Community Center for All Seasons, which is on Route 27, about one-half mile south of Belgrade Lakes village. For the first time ever during the 2015 summer the BHS was able to have visiting hours for 4 hours every Thursday afternoon.
Students with an interest in the history of the Belgrade Lakes region would find this an especially enjoyable and rewarding experience. As a docent, you would receive about 4 hours of training to become familiar with the varieties of materials in the BHS collection, such as antique artifacts, old documents, old photographic images, and the variety of books, periodicals and reports relevant to the history of Belgrade. You also will learn about Maine Historical society-compatible filing system that enables docents easily to locate files relevant to frequent public requests for information on family history, former and current camps for children, the historic lodgings, mills, and stores in Belgrade Depot, Belgrade Lakes, and North Belgrade, and the role of farms, fishing and hunting in Belgrade’s past.
We also have public lectures during the summer and plan to hold our 2nd history fair at the Old Town House across from Pine Grove cemetery, and there are opportunities to assist at the history table at all events. For example, during our fair this past summer, many people stopped by to donate small antiques and old photographs, and they related fascinating stories about the history of these objects.
For more information about the BHS, its historical collections and services, please look at our website: www.belgradehistoricalsociety.org and also stop by our history room if you at the CFAS and look at our photo exhibit and display cases.
