Principal’s Pen

Hello:

Fall finally made an appearance this weekend. The warm days and cool evenings are a sure sign that summer is officially over.

This Wednesday and Thursday are Parent/Teacher conferences. You may register for conferences by visiting the MHS homepage on the district website. The link is located in two places: under the calendar of events if you scroll down to October 4th and October 5th you can click on those dates and there is a link that will take you to the registration page. Also, on the guidance department page you can click on Information and Events and the link is provided there as well. The times of the conferences are 3:00-6:30 on Wednesday and 5:00-8:00 on Thursday. We hope you will be able to join us on one of those evenings.

Just a reminder that there is no school for students this Friday, October 6th and next Monday, October 9th. Classes will resume on the 10th.

Congratulations to the following students as they were selected as the September Students of the Month: Justin Bowman (gr. 9), Brandon Veilleux (gr. 10), and Makayla Wilson (gr. 12). We were unable to recognize our junior student of the month as their family was unable to be in attendance on the day of the assembly so we will include him/her in the October Student of the Month assembly.

Last week we conducted our first Lock Down drill. Students and staff were given advanced notice so that they could review the protocol that is in place. We were pleased to see that all involved took this drill very seriously and that the procedures for such an event were followed. We have also completed our first fire drill exercise and that went well also. Students and staff exited the building quickly and reported to their designated stations without incident. We will continue to perform these exercises throughout the school year.

At the end of last week I was having a conversation with a few of my colleagues here at the high school and we were discussing how the elementary schools embrace parent volunteers in their schools. By the time students get to middle school the level of volunteering starts to dwindle and when it comes to high school there are very few opportunities for parents to volunteer. I came up with the idea of creating a resource list for staff that would list parents’ names and their occupations as well as their areas of expertise. What I envision is, as a teacher, I could take a look at the resource list, connect with a parent who may have experience or knowledge in the content I am covering and ask them to come in and discuss/demonstrate the concepts the students would be learning. If you would feel comfortable doing this please email me and let me know the best way to reach you and what areas of support you could provide. I look forward to creating this connection with the parents of our MHS students.

On October 11th all sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSATs. As previously mentioned this is typically administered to the sophomores but as part of the MELMAC Grant, which we have been awarded again this year, we must include all juniors in the fall testing. There will be regular classes for all freshmen and seniors on that day.

Enjoy the week

Paula
