MHS Playoff Preview

The Messalonskee girls’ soccer team has been a program on the rise in recent years, becoming a winning squad with legitimate Class A North title aspirations. Monday the fourth-seeded Eagles open their 2017 playoff campaign when they host fifth-ranked Edward Little in a quarterfinal contest at 3 p.m.

The question going into the game is whether Messalonskee is ready to take the next step in its climb to Class A North prominence.

But then Messalonskee’s field hockey and football teams, which also face playoff games this week, have questions to answer as well.

For the second-seeded field hockey team, the question is whether they can finally overcome No. 1 Skowhegan in the Class A North final when they meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hampden Academy. Skowhegan has won the regional title game for 16 straight years, most times beating the Eagles in the title match. Messalonskee split its two meeting with the Indians during the regular season, winning the first game and falling in the rematch.

In the Class B North football tournament, the Eagles will host Brewer in a quarterfinal contest at 7 p.m. Friday. Both teams finished the regular season 4-4.
