Principal’s Pen

Hello:

What a week it’s been! We hope that those of you who are experiencing the power outage that you are safe and warm. We have opened up the showers here at the high school from 6:00-7:00 am and if you need to charge your phone or electronics the library is open from 7:00-8:00 am for you to come in and use.

Initially the end of the first quarter was November 1st with the new quarter starting Thursday. Due to the fact that we did not have school on Monday and many of our students are still without power we have extended the quarter through this Friday. Hopefully this move will reduce some of the stress that everyone is experiencing during this time.

On Tuesday I had an interesting conversation with a student as they entered the school. Instead of their good morning greeting they asked when the wi-fi was going to be back up and running. I did not have a definitive answer for this student and they then asked why they were in school today. I said that since we had power we could open the school and try to have a normal day. Their response was, it’s not a normal day because we don’t have wi-fi! How far we have come from the days of paper and pencil, hard-cover books and class discussions. Right or wrong I found it interesting that this student thought that the only way they could get through the day was by using their technology. What if we had “electronic free days” once a month, could we make it through the day?

Thank you to all of our student athletes who left everything they had on the fields this fall. Their dedication to their sport and representing MHS in various capacities exemplifies Eagle Pride.

Our math team is gearing up for their next meet which happens to be today. It is amazing to watch these students practice after school with the assistance of their coaches, Mr. and Mrs. Hart. The team always does well and is often in the top tier of competitors.

Congratulations to the new inductees of the MHS National Honor Society. The initiation ceremony is being held on November 1st at 6:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center. A small reception will follow the ceremony.

If you’re looking for some local entertainment mark your calendar for November 17-19. The drama students will be performing The Adams Family with three shows: November 17-18 at 7:00 pm and November 19th at 2:00. Guaranteed to be an awesome show!

Just a reminder that there is no school on November 10th (observance of Veteran’s Day) and November 13th (Workshop Day). Students who are behind in their community service hours could use these two days to pick away at their hours.

Here’s to everyone getting their power back soon, warm showers and a good home-cooked meal. Be safe

Paula
