The Messalonskee Monitor Debuts

The Messalonskee Monitor, the high school’s first online student newspaper, is making its debut this week. Written entirely by students, the Monitor is an effort to provide information relevant to those who attend Messalonskee High School in a professional and timely manner.

In the first edition, staff writer Jonathan Christopher reveals the facts surrounding an offensive Instagram message featuring images and words that demeaned several Messalonskee students. The story makes plain the disturbing power of social media to do harm as well as the difficulty in preventing such attacks. Expect to see a follow-up story in the Messalonskee Monitor on the situation.

The Monitor also includes a column by staff writer Gabe Lenfestey in which he weighs in on the impact that the massive electrical power outage this fall had on him and his family. On the feature front, reporter Katie Seekins explores the reasons some students and at least one teacher choose to adhere to a vegetarian diet.
