MHS Students of the Month – May 2018
For May’s Student of the Month honorees, community service proved to be the dominant theme, highlighted by the remarkable number of volunteer hours that senior recipient C.J. Scamman compiled during his high school career.
Scamman currently has 800 volunteer hours to his credit. In addition, his nominating educator described Scamman as a student willing to take on challenges who has worked hard to succeed both at Messalonskee and Mid-Maine Technical Center.
Joining Scamman on the PAC stage for Student of the Month recognition were the following students: junior Leah Smith, sophomore Sarah Lowell, freshman Trent Thompson, and Student Choice winner Eli Ross.
Thompson, like Scamman, has compiled an impressive record of community service in his young life. A member of the Civilian Air Patrol, Thompson also participated in Wreath Across America, placing wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery. On the local level, he has volunteered at Belgrade Central School and delivered supplies to law enforcement officers involved in a recent investigation in the Norridgewock area.
Lowell, the sophomore winner, is known for her kind, congenial demeanor and open-minded perspective. Her nominating teacher described her as student who helps enrich discussions and debates due to her thoughtful consideration of opposing viewpoints.
Junior recipient Smith is another student committed to community service and supporting classmates. Along with accumulating nearly 100 volunteer hours, Leah also serves as a peer mentor and regularly helps to tutor fellow students in need.
Ross, the Student Choice selection, took community service to the international level by participating in a two-week mission in Guatemala in which he helped build shelters and schools – a reflection of his strong belief citizenship.
Messalonskee also had a student honored as a Mid-Maine Technical Center Student of the Month. Senior Colby Doone received the award for his efforts in precision machining.
