Messalonskee High School Playoff Roundup
The Messalonskee girls’ indoor track team flexed its powerful depth last weekend to capture its second Class A KVAC title in program history.
Charlotte Wentworth earned the Eagles’ lone individual championship in taking first in the 400-meter run. Thanks to a wealth of strong performances in multiple events, however, Messalonskee managed to collect 119.5 points, which gave the Eagles a 15-point victory over second place Edward Little.
Peyton Arbour (second in the 2-mile), Alexa Brennan (third in the 800, fourth in the mile), and Emma Wentworth (second in the 200 and 400), and Markiana Hewett (third in the 55 hurdles and fourth in the pole vault) also had strong performances. On the boys’ side, Ben Edman took second in the shot put.
The girls’ victory highlighted the start of the winter postseason in high school athletics for the Eagles. Messalonskee swimmers also competed and today – Friday, Feb. 15 – the Messalonskee girls’ basketball team begins its quest for a third straight appearance in the Class A North finals. That game is slated at 7 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center with the fifth-ranked Eagles facing No. 4 Gardiner (12-6).
Along with the Messalonskee girls’ triumph in the KVAC indoor track finals, several Messalonskee individuals have fared well in the postseason.
Leading the list is Edmund Couture who took first in the 200 free and 100 butterfly in the KVAC Class A swim championships. Teammate Martin Guarnieri also excelled at the meet, winning the 200 individual medley and placing third in the breast stroke.
The Messalonskee girls’ swim team, which placed third in the KVAC Class A meet, captured first in the 400-freestyle relay with the foursome of Morgan Veilleux, Olivia Roy, Edin Sisson, and Leah Smith. Smith also placed second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free. Roy, meanwhile, took second in the 100 butterfly.
