Update from Ms. Callan 03/30/20

March 30, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students:

First and foremost I hope that everyone is doing well. It is important to acknowledge the support that you are giving your students as they try to make sense of all that is happening. I recognize that each and every one of you is doing your best to establish some semblance of a routine within your household while trying to fulfill your commitments outside of the home (whether that be reporting to work or taking care of others). THANK YOU, seems a little inadequate to express my appreciation for all that you are doing but please know that we could not be meeting the needs of our students without your efforts.

I would like to publicly acknowledge the work that our teachers are doing in an attempt to keep all students actively engaged in their learning. While the lessons look different and there is no grading taking place we want our students to move forward at a pace that is comfortable and stress free. Students should not be spending long periods of time on their computers trying to complete work that is in the work folders. I would encourage them to find a routine that works best for them as they have other responsibilities to uphold. All I can ask is that students attempt, each day, to access the resource folders of each of their teachers, do the work that has been provided and submit it when completed. The teachers are doing their best to provide feedback to students on their work and they will continue to do this as long as we are out.

We have elected to close out all quarter 3 classes (PE/Health, Art, JMG, Seminars, Tech Trades). The teachers of these courses have reached out to students to let them know that this will be happening on April 3rd and that they have until then to get in any work that is not completed from before the school closing. Beginning April 6th we will begin our quarter 4 classes. If your son/daughter is unsure of whether or not they have a quarter 4th class please let them know that they can contact their school counselor or the main office and we will be happy to help them out.

For seniors only we are waiving all remaining community service hours. Because of the uncertainty of when the social distancing will be lifted it would be unfair to expect that students fulfill this requirement. If you would like to record any hours you may be collecting during this time we would be happy to enter them. Otherwise, we are going to accept the hours that you currently have accumulated. While this may seem like a small gesture for some students it is a huge relief.

Many of you have reached out with regards to all activities that are associated with senior celebrations. We have not lost sight of the importance of each of these events and are still planning to somehow hold each one of them. As Mr. Gartley indicated in his update this week we are working on several scenarios that are contingent upon our return date. When we have a clearer picture of what the future looks like with regards to graduation, etc. we will reach out to the members of the senior class through a Zoom meeting.

It has been nice to see so many people enjoying the outdoors. Many have taken advantage of the track as well as the field. As the weather begins to improve I would just like to caution people about gathering in large numbers in outdoor spaces. We still need to follow the social distancing directive so please be aware of those around you, especially the number of people around you.

Please take care of yourself and enjoy the day

Paula
