Meet Messalonskee High School’s Assistant Principal, Peter McLaughlin

Meet Messalonskee High School’s Assistant Principal, Peter McLaughlin.

What was your greatest memory from last school year?

My greatest memory from last year was graduation. Seeing those students walk across the stage put an exclamation mark on an incredible year. The students persevered through so many challenges over their four years at Messalonskee High School. They were an amazing class that we will miss greatly.

What jobs have you had before becoming an administrator?

Before becoming an administrator, I was a history teacher, assistant athletic director, and varsity basketball coach for 10 years.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love sports and the outdoors. When I am not at school, I am outside, enjoying what nature has to offer.

What’s been your best school memory – either as a student or administrator.

This is a tough question. My favorite memory is winning our school’s first Northern Maine Championship in boy’s basketball. Few truly understand the time and commitment that goes into making a dream become reality. This group of young men will always have a special place in my heart.

What would your students be surprised to find out about you?

My favorite time of the year is late fall and winter. I have completed several winter backpacking trips throughout the northeast. Yes, that means ice climbing and sleeping in the snow!

Tell us about your family!

They are my everything! I met my wife, Katie, at the University of Maine at Farmington and we have been married for 10 years. We have been blessed with two beautiful children, Peter and Jack.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment has been my life’s work. Over the last 20 years, I have been fortunate enough to work with incredible people and have inspired many to accomplish their dreams. There is no greater joy than running into alumni five or six years down the road and hearing about what they are doing now and the successes they have accomplished. I am a lifelong educator and I would not have it any other way.
