Messalonskee boys hockey takes the ice at 7:30 tomorrow night at Colby College

When the Messalonskee boys hockey players take the ice at 7:30 tomorrow night at Colby College, they’ll be facing John Bapst, the team that beat them in the Class B North championship last season.

John Bapst, the No. 1 seed on that occasion, prevailed 3-1 on the strength of its trademark defensive prowess.

Tomorrow the stakes will be slightly lower; instead of a regional title on the line, the game is a Class B North semifinal. The Messalonskee Sports Boosters are covering the cost of admission for Messalonskee high school students (students must show their school ID at the door).

Messalonskee, this season’s top ranked Class B north team, can reach the regional final for a second straight year with a victory.

No. 2 Cony plays No. 3 Hampden Academy tonight at Colby in the other semifinal.

The semifinal finalist winners will battle for the regional title at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Maine at Orono’s Alfond Arena.

Messalonskee split its two matches against John Bapst during the regular season, winning 3-2 in the first meeting and falling 3-1 in the rematch four days later.
