Homecoming Week is upon us! Go Eagles!

Messalonskee Principal Scott Hallett expects to be extremely tired by the end of next week, which is understandable given the school he runs will be turned upside down and inside out during a Spirit Week filled with rallies and competition amidst the color and roar of streamers and screamers.

But Hallett is not complaining.

Spirit Week, he said, is about unity and celebrating the strength and value of that bond.

“It comes down to the inclusiveness of all students, the student body, to have pride in their school,” Hallett said.

“Culture and school spirit lead to productivity and success because we all have a common goal.”

Spirit Week officially launches on Sunday morning when the four classes – freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior – decorate their respective wings from top to bottom in a kaleidoscope of colors and patterns.

Monday is crammed with activities, starting with a pep rally to end the school day that segues into a float-decorating session to prepare for a parade that commences at 6 p.m. that features the floats as well as sports teams, cheerleaders, clubs, fire trucks, and the high school band.

The rest of the week is chock-full of class competitions and athletics contests leading up to the homecoming football game Friday night and the homecoming dance on Saturday evening.

Yep, Hallett acknowledges, exhaustion will be one of the byproducts of the frenzied festivities or, at least, for him that is the case.

No worries, though. Hallett is content to suffer the consequences for the sake of school spirit.
