Cabaret Night…an evening of performances by Messalonskee students slated for 7 p.m. – 2/11/23

For one night at least, life will be a cabaret for Messalonskee freshman Alex Dubois, and he couldn’t be more excited.

“It is so much fun,” he said of the anticipation to perform in Cabaret Night this Saturday, “just to get out of the routine of doing schoolwork .”

Organized by choral director Rebecca Reed and band director Andy Forster, Cabaret Night is an evening of performances by Messalonskee students slated for 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

Admission is $5 for adults and  $3 for students, staff, and children.

Reed said funds raised from the event will be used to help pay for a trip to a music festival in Massachusetts this May planned by the music department.

But apart from the fundraising, Cabaret Night is a chance for students to perform at a smaller and more intimate level than a typical school concert.

“It is different,” she said, “in that it is small groups and soloists.”

Reed said more than 30 students will participate in the event, which she expects to be 90 minutes to 2 hours in duration.

Dubois, a member of the Messalonskee Mastersingers, will perform as part of the bass section of the choir.

The plan, he said, is to sing “Feeling Good” – a song first made famous by jazz singer Nina Simone. But Dubois said he and his fellow Mastersingers will do a version of the song made popular by Michael Bublé.

Dubois said he loves that his family, both immediate and extended, show up in big numbers whenever he has the opportunity to perform.

That, he said, is part of the fun and another reason to be excited about the night ahead.
