MHS Students of the Month – December 2017

At one point, Messalonskee High School principal Paula Callan described one of the December Student of the Month recipients as having “flawless grades.” This was no doubt true and certainly impressive, but perfection, whether in grades or athletics, is not a requirement for a being a Student of the Month. In fact, students who earn the award come in all shapes and sizes, and the factor they all share, the one that causes them to be recognized, is each in his or her own way helps make Messalonskee a more pleasant place to live and learn.

Called to the Performing Arts Center stage on Wednesday were freshman Katelyn Douglass, sophomore Victoria Terranova, junior Gabrielle Elkin, and senior Colin Kinney.

Katelyn, along with her academic achievements, was described as a student who always has a smile on her face. Ms. Callan, meanwhile, applauded Victoria’s work ethic and perseverance, Gabrielle’s academic and dancing excellence, and Colin’s willingness to help others.

Ms. Callan also recognized the following four Messalonskee students who earned Student of the Month honors at Mid-Maine Technical Center: Megan Smith, medical careers; Jasmine Lambert, mass media communications; James Pino, criminal justice; and Parker Brunelle, construction technology.

In a related matter, Ms. Callan revealed that next month Messalonskee students will have the opportunity to cast votes for a Student of the Month. She said the Student Council is developing the criteria for nominating a student.

Finally, Callan announced that the social studies/science wing won the Christmas door decorating competition.
