MHS Junior Class Auction
On the sheet of items for this Saturday’s annual Junior Class auction, a person can find a Patriots Super Bowl plaque bundle with a listed value of $105. Two items down the sheet is a marine life bucket bag with a listed value of $100. But the attention getter, the big-ticket item without question, is what’s in between: a signed David Ortiz Boston Red Sox jersey. The value? Priceless, of course.
In fact, the Junior Auction features five “priceless” items on the sheet for this year’s auction, which begins with a 5 p.m. dinner and silent auction in the Messalonskee High School cafeteria – the live auction commences at 6. Admission is $10.
The other priceless items are a handmade quilt, a Beer Run Brewery basket, a baseball signed my Red Sox pitcher David Price, and a Nick Mayo fan pack.
The final item is understandably precious to Junior Class advisor Jennifer Mayo. Nick is her son. He also is a basketball star with NBA aspirations after earning first team All-Conference honors in the Ohio Valley Conference as a member of the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels. “For Nick’s fan pack (which is a bunch of signed items – his last worn basketball sneakers, hat, shirt(s), signed poster, mini ball, and pictures) I have gone to Facebook to see if I could get some interest going,” Jennifer Mayo explained. “I’m up to $200! I think that’s OK, but I’m hoping for much higher!”
Mayo, a math teacher at Messalonskee, said she hopes the same scenario results for the other priceless items as well. The idea, she said, is to find people who “have to have” the items and are willing to “bid astronomically” as a result.
Truth be told, the organizers of the Junior Auction will accept a finite amount of money for any items on their list – even the priceless ones. Still, they have lofty ambitions for the auction. Mayo said she hopes to make at least $10,000, all of which will be used to for the Class of 2020’s Project Graduation.
“We are so nervous about the turnout,” Jennifer Mayo said. ” We have some amazing items from gift cards to just about anywhere in the area to day trip adventures, concert tickets, beautiful handmade items, senior photo packages, sports camps, and home decor. There will be something of interest for everyone.”
The auction meal will be potluck with “lots of different crockpot creations, various types of salads, breads, and decadent desserts,” according to Mayo.
