MHS Golf Team

A year ago, the Messalonskee golf team nearly walked away with a KVAC team championship.

This week the Eagles, led by three talented and experienced seniors, could take the next step and claim the conference crown.

“Last year we showed up and lost by 1,” Messalonskee golf coach Jim Kerschner said, “so I think we have a shot at the KVACs.”

The championship meet is slated at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 at Brunswick Country Club.

Camden Hills edged the Eagles last year at the event. Kerschner, though, sees Mt. Ararat as the Eagles primary rival this time.

Seniors Dylan Cunningham, Bradley Condon, and Ben Hellen are the veterans for the Eagles. Sam Seekins, James Smith, and Mitchell Grant round out the team.

Messalonskee dominated the competition during the regular season, finishing with a 9-2 record.

Kerschner said the Eagles are blessed with quality depth.

“We’ve had five guys on the team be medalists this year,” he said, “so we just have to have all of them step up and do well (at the KVAC championship).”

While such a scenario is never a given, Kerschner said his golfers have displayed a particularly strong commitment to the sport this season. “I think they have been really focused and dedicated,” he said.
