Principal’s Pen: January 3rd-7th

Happy New Year Everyone:

Right before the holiday break we recognized the following students as the December Students of the Month: Gabrielle Hamlin (gr. 10), Deandra Poulliot (gr. 11), and Ian McCurdy (gr. 12). Our freshman student of the month was not able to join us on the day of the assembly so we will be recognizing them at our January assembly. Our Eagle Excellence Award was given to Mrs. Hallett, one of our study hall monitors. Congratulations to all who were recognized.

On January 12th The Maine Steiners will be visiting MHS. They are an a capella group from the University of Maine-Orono who will be conducting a workshop with our music students in the morning. performing for our student body later in the day and they will be closing out their stay with us with an evening performance in the PAC at 7:00 pm. The public is welcome to attend and we hope you are able to join us.

The end of semester one is near and students will be taking part in final exams during the week of January 17th. I have attached the schedule for you to have on hand. 2021-2022 First Semester Final Exam Schedule You will notice there are no classes scheduled for the 17th as that is Martin Luther King Day and there is no school. There is no school on January 24th as that is a teacher workshop day. Should there be a snow day during finals week we will be sure to communicate a change in the schedule.

You may have heard that we are experiencing an uptick in the number of incidences involving vandalism in our bathrooms. The damages that have happened thus far not only increase the amount of work for our custodial staff but they have a financial impact as well. To date we have closed the men’s room in the math wing as that sustained a significant amount of damage. We will continue to close bathrooms as they are damaged and will, if necessary, only have one bathroom open on the main floor for use. If, and when, those students who are causing the damage are caught they will face vandalism charges and be expected to pay restitution. We are better than this and expect our students to behave in a manner that reflects our Eagle Pride. We have asked the staff to have their students sign-out when they are going to use the restroom and we are checking the bathrooms in between periods in hopes to eliminate this destructive behavior.

We have two student teachers who will be with us during the second semester. Stephen Gray (Thomas College) will be with Rachael Power in the math department and Zack Hubbard (UMF) will be working with Dayle Morin in the social studies department.

Enjoy the week
