Principal’s Pen – Summer Edition

July 3, 2023

Happy Summer!!

First and foremost, congratulations to everyone on a great 22-23 school year!!  I hope everyone is having a restful and relaxing summer trying to enjoy the sunshine when it appears!  I hope everyone has a great July 4th celebration!

I’d like to congratulate Ms. Callan on her retirement!!  She is a key component to the success of Messalonskee High School and she will be missed dearly.  We look forward to Ms. Callan visiting and staying in touch!

With Ms. Callan retiring, we have some changes and additions to the administrative team.

My name is Scott Hallett.  I have the honor and privilege of serving Messalonskee High School as Principal.  I have served as a teacher, an assistant principal and currently as principal here at Messo!  I come to this position with 22 years of experience in education.  I was a classroom teacher for 10 years and I have served in various school based and district level administrative positions for the additional 12.  A fun fact is that my grandmother started her career here at Messo when the high school was known as Oakland High School, in the Williams Elementary school building, in the late 40’s to early 50’s.  My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed coming back to our roots here in Central Maine!

It is my privilege to introduce to you, our veteran Assistant Principal, Peter McLaughlin.  Mr. McLaughlin has 14 years experience, all right here in RSU18.  He has served as a middle and high school teacher for 10 years.  Mr. McLaughlin ran a very successful basketball program here at Messalonskee High School for 10 years.  He is going on his fifth year as an assistant principal here at Messo and will be serving sophomores and seniors for the upcoming 23-24 school year.  A fun fact is that Mr. McLaughlin resides with his wife, two sons, 2 cats, 3 dogs and 12 chickens!!

I would like to welcome the newest member to the team, Nathan Davis.  Mr. Davis comes to us with 6 years experience as a math teacher right here at Messalonskee High School.  He has coached multiple sports to include basketball, tennis and the E-sports club.  Mr. Davis has also served in a supervisor role within our athletic department as well as a leadership team representative for Math.  A fun fact is that Mr. Davis has competed in three National Chess Championships!!

Construction update…

If you have made it by the school lately, I am sure you see the extensive summer work taking place.  Currently the Library has brand new floors installed and ready for day one.  We are currently waiting for new furniture and for the walls to be painted.  More to come regarding the library.  The main foyer area along with the main office hallway will be fresh with brand new tile.  This job is currently about 50% done and looking great!

A special shout out to our custodial staff for their hard work as they clean each classroom as well as strip and polish every floor in the school.  This is a difficult task that takes effective planning and execution to ensure all classrooms are ready for the first day students arrive.  Thank you again to our custodial staff!!

Summer work…

A special Thank You to the clerical staff working throughout the summer months!!

Thank you Denise Caouette for keeping the main office and the rest of the school in line and moving forward all year long…..especially during the summer months!!

Thank you Kathy Pettengill for keeping the guidance office in line and working on the schedule all summer long!!

Thank you Jessica Wills for keeping Athletics in line and for all of the summer events you keep us up to date on!!

I hope everyone is enjoying the start to their summer and I wish everyone a safe and exciting 4th of July!

You should begin to receive student schedules and other information at the start of August.

Please look for a Principal Pen update in August.

It’s A Great Day To Be An Eagle!!
