MHS Fall Sports Preview 2024
Athletic competitions once more will abound at Messalonskee High School athletic fields as the fall sports season kicks off in earnest this week, but arguably the most successful program will be largely out of sight.
Say hello to the Messalonskee golf team, which plays its “home” matches at Belgrade Lakes Golf Club – a distance of about 14 miles from the high school. Still, what the Eagles lack in visibility they more than make up in talent. “We finished sixth in the state last year out of 30 Class A teams,” head coach Gene Dumont said.
Junior Liam McFadden and sophomore Gavin Jackson are the leading golfers back from last year. They are joined by senior Donovan Hermann and freshman Greyson Dooley to form a highly competitive top four. But Dumont said his team is solid throughout the roster.
“We are a deep team,” Dumont said, “but our strongest players are young. Our depth is with our seniors.”
Messalonskee golfers opened the season last week, beating Skowhegan by 13 strokes in a KVAC match. Dumont expects the Eagles to be one of the strongest teams in the conference once more.
The rest of Messalonskee’s varsity sports teams (boys and girls soccer, field hockey, cross country, volleyball, and football) open their regular season this week. Messalonskee athletic director Chad Foye is confident that the Eagles should be competitive in every fall sport.
“They all have potential,” he said, “and they are all going to get better, which is key.”
