Meet Peter McLaughlin, Assistant Principal of Messalonskee High School

Meet Peter McLaughlin, Assistant Principal of Messalonskee High School!

Personal Background and Motivation

Mr. McLaughlin’s favorite memory from last school year was graduation. He shared that helping students cross the finish line and begin the next chapter of their lives makes everything educators do worthwhile. He could not be more proud of last year’s graduating class.

Leadership Style and Vision
If McLaughlin weren’t in the field of education, he imagines he would have pursued a career as either a college basketball coach or an engineer. While those paths reflect his love of athletics and problem-solving, he is confident he made the right decision in following his passion for education. He is continually inspired by the amazing students of Messalonskee High School.

Community Engagement
When it comes to what he enjoys most about being part of RSU 18, McLaughlin points to the strong sense of community and the opportunity to work with students, families, and staff in meaningful ways. The most rewarding part of his job is seeing students grow and achieve their goals, while the most challenging part can be balancing the many responsibilities that come with school leadership.

Personal Insights
Mr. McLaughlin treasures his family above all else. He and his wife, Katie, met at the University of Maine at Farmington and have been married for 11 years. Together, they have two children, Peter and Jack, who keep life full of joy and energy. Over the summer, McLaughlin loves spending time with his family at sporting events, out in nature, or on the lake—always making memories and sharing laughter.

Fun Favorites
One surprising fact about Mr. McLaughlin is that his favorite time of year is late fall and winter. He has completed several winter backpacking trips throughout the northeast, which included ice climbing and even sleeping in the snow!
