Messalonskee enters the Class A North Boys’ Basketball Championships as the No. 1

Messalonskee enters the Class A North Boys’ Basketball Championships as the No. 1 seed with a 16-2 record and an 11-game winning streak – numbers that would suggest the Eagles being a heavy favorite to win the regional title.

But senior Michael Achorn, a forward/center for the Eagles, knows better. He knows firsthand that Class A North is overflowing with competitive teams.

“None of these games are going to be automatic,” Achorn said.

The Eagles opened the tournament against No. 8 Nokomis, a team Messalonskee beat twice during the regular season that finished 5-13.

But as with the playoff field as a whole, Achorn said he expects the Eagles will be tested. “I feel like it is going to be a good game,” he said. “They are always a scrappy team.”

While the Eagles beat Nokomis soundly (62-43) in the first meeting, the rematch about a month later proved to be a tight game with the Eagles prevailing 55-47.

Achorn said he sees Brewer, Hampden Academy, and Camden Hills as the top competition in the tournament.

The Eagles were able to capture a win 55-39 over Nokomis on Saturday. The semifinal contest is slated for 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Augusta Civic Center vs. Camden Hills.
