Messalonskee boys ice hockey team is perched atop the Class B North rankings

On the strength of a four-game winning streak, the Messalonskee boys ice hockey team is perched atop the Class B North rankings.

The Eagles, 8-2, have capitalized on their opportunities against the strongest teams in Class A, beating both top ranked Thornton Academy and No. 2 Cheverus. Messalonskee also defeated Scarborough, the sixth-ranked team in Class A.

The victory against Thornton is the Golden Trojans’ only loss of the season. Messalonskee prevailed 7-4 in that season-opening contest.

Ahead for the Eagles are games against the only two teams, both of them from Class B North, to beat Messalonskee this season: No. 2 Cony and No. 4 Hampden/Nokomis/Ellsworth/MDI.

While Messalonskee senior forwards Colby Hardy and Logan Baron are proud of the team’s ascension to No. 1 in Class B North, they also said they feel the pressure to keep their ranking.

“We don’t want to drop to No. 2,” Hardy said, “so every game [left in the regular season] is more important.”

Both rematches are scheduled at the Eagles’ home ice at Colby College: Cony on Feb. 7 and Hampden on Feb. 14.
